fter three-and-a-half decades, 38 Special is still driving fans wild with their most recent attitude-packed release, “Drivetrain,” and their intensity-filled live performances.
“Drivetrain,” released in 2004, was the band’s first full-length studio album in years. With songs like the first single, “Hurts Like Love,” and “Trooper with an Attitude” from the “Super Troopers” soundtrack, the band said the album “personifies what rock and roll is all about. It’s greasy, it’s loud and it’s proud.”
Frontman Donnie Van Zant and guitarist-vocalist Don Barnes co-founded the band in Jacksonville, Fla. more than three decades ago. Since 1975, the band has released more than 15 albums, selling some 15 million copies.
In its early days, 38 Special built its reputation on Southern boogie and blues-rock, before transforming into a more arena-rock-friendly style. In its second decade, the band scored big with a slew of hits, including rockers such as “Caught Up in You,” “Hold on Loosely,” “If I’d Been the One,” and “Rockin’ into the Night,” as well as slower tunes like “Second Chance.” Today, 38 Special is showcasing its harder edge, as can be heard on “Drivetrain.” The band also continues to tour relentlessly, playing more than 100 shows per year.
Joining Van Zant and Barnes on stage are Danny Chauncey (guitar, vocals), Larry Junstrom (bass), Bobby Capps (keyboards, vocals) and Gary Moffatt (drums) |
