It’s CARdboard City time!

 Experience a life changing night of homelessness with us.

• July 15-16, Friday-Saturday, from 5pm to 8am, Green Gate, the Alaska State Fairgrounds.
Each year, our community participates in this event designed to:

• Raise awareness for homeless families in our Valley, and to
• Raise money to support positive action in serving this population.
During this event, now in its 11th year, individual or group participants may choose to sleep in a cardboard box or sleep in a CAR. They design and decorate their dwelling, brave Alaska weather to sleep in it for just one night, eat donated food from a “soup kitchen,” learn something about the life of the homeless in the Mat-Su Valley, and maybe even win a prize for their creative dwelling.

The emphasis in the name of our event has changed slightly. It is now CARdboard City. CARdboard City is Family Promise’s major fundraising event. This nonprofit, sheltering families in area churches and on site, offers families without housing compassionate care through immediate assistance, shelter, meals, and case management. And Family Promise relies on money raised to move forward in its mission.

Did you know, right here in our valley, there are well over 800 school children sleeping in cars, in tents, on someone else’s couch, and yes, even in cardboard boxes? CARdboard City represents only a minuscule part of the challenges these families face daily. Nothing can really get this point across shy of swapping places with them. However, participation in this event and donations garnered will help, and all monies raised go directly to assisting these Valley families.
